can mean either "against Christ" or "instead of Christ," or
perhaps, combining the two, "one who, assuming the guise of Christ,
opposes Christ" (Westcott). The word is found only in John's epistles, (a)
of the many "antichrists" who are forerunners of the
"Antichrists" himself, 1 John 2:18,22; 2
John 1:7; (b) of the evil power which already operates anticipatively of the
"Antichrist," 1 John 4:3.
What the Apostle says of him so closely
resembles what he says of the first beast in Rev. 13, and what the Apostle Paul
says of the Man of Sin in 2 Thess. 2, that the same person seems to be in view
in all these passages, rather than the second beast in Rev. 13, the false
prophet; for the latter supports the former in all his Antichristian
assumptions.

false Christ," is to be distinguished from the above; it is found in Matt.

The answer to
this question is so simple, although much speculation has been made of it in
the past. As John said here (1 John

the turn of the Second Century C.E., there were people in the Christian
congregation (probably more Judaizers) who were denying that there ever was a
Jesus, or possibly denying that he was the Chosen One of God. And as John said

amounted to an unforgivable sin against God’s Holy Breath, because it was God’s
Breath that testified to just who Jesus was. So, this was a very serious
matter. In fact, it was so serious that John told Christians not to even talk
to such people – to treat them as though they were dead – because, what they
were saying truly condemned them.

a sect that combined Egyptian, Greek, Jewish and Christian thought. They

Antichrist
Definition: Antichrist means against or instead of
Christ. The term applies to all who deny what the Bible says about Jesus
Christ, all who oppose his Kingdom, and all who mistreat his followers. It also
includes individuals, organizations, and nations that falsely claim to
represent Christ or that improperly ascribe to themselves the role of Messiah.
Does the Bible refer to only
one antichrist?
1 John 2:18:
“Young children, it is the last hour, and, just as you have heard that
antichrist is coming, even now there have come to be many antichrists;
from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour.”
2 John 7: “Many
deceivers have gone forth into the world, persons not confessing Jesus Christ
as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (Notice that
the “many antichrists” of 1 John
Is the coming of the antichrist
reserved for some future time?
1 John 4:3:
“Every inspired expression that does not confess Jesus does not originate with
God. Furthermore, this is the antichrist’s inspired expression which you have
heard was coming, and now it is already in the
world.” (That was written near the end of the first century C.E.)
1 John 2:18: “Even
now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the
knowledge that it is the last hour.” (By “last hour” John evidently meant the
end of the apostolic period. The other apostles had died, and John himself was
very old.)
